Quadroblers, furries and therians - what today's teens are into

A popular hobby for kids around the world is quad biking. How is it evolving in 2025 and should parents be concerned? The first quadrober article we already wrote in 2024, and today we explore this direction in more detail.

Are therians and furries quadroblers or not?

To people not initiated into the subculture, at first glance it seems that all these people in masks with tails are the same. But among themselves, teenagers distinguish different directions. Among them there are therians (theri or therianthropes), as well as furries.

Who are the therians? This trend has grown from quadrobics to an extreme degree of imitation of animals. It is about them that they write in the news that children show aggression - barking, biting and even attacking passers-by. Such teenagers, and most often they are minors, dress up in animal costumes and try to imitate them as much as possible.

Furries, unlike therians, are fairly peaceful fans of famous characters with animal traits. As a rule, they sew or buy ready-made animal costumes for festivals or cosplay. Furries call their costumes fursuits (fur, suit), which come in many varieties. In this articleFor example, the types and differences of fursuits are explained in detail. Many furries have blogs on social media and an army of fans.

Quadroblers consider themselves to be athletes, although this type of physical activity is not officially recognized in the world. Imitating the movements of animals, quadroblers try to perform tricks that they perform in their natural environment. For example, jumping high or over obstacles, running on four limbs and so on.

But in the minds of ordinary everyday people, all of these offshoots of the subculture refer to the generic word "quadrobics."

Where to look for quadrobics representatives?

Since the trend originated in Japan, the 2024 festival was held there Bakenekoa gathering of Quadrobics fans.

In other countries, quadrobloggers, who mostly meet through popular social media blogs, have also started hosting events.

Where do quadroblers "live"? Since it involves mostly teenagers, of course, in youth social networks. You can find many blogs of advanced and novice quadroblers in TikTok, Likee, YouTube and so on under the tag "quadrobics".

In which countries is quadrobics popular?

There is no exact data yet where quadroblers have the most fans. Since the growth in popularity of this direction is observed during the last one and a half to two years. But in the USA, for example, there are already regular meetings with furries and quadrobers. The list of past events can be seen on their available.

In Russia, this subculture began to gain popularity through bloggers around the middle of 2023. And, as usual, the most active representatives began to get into the news bulletins. Therefore, in 2024 in publiki sounded serious proposals to introduce a ban on quadrobics. That is, to ban the hobby at the legislative level.

While authorities ponder how to respond to the youth trend, marketplace vendors are offering kits for quadrobers. These include maxis, tails and gloves. Masks can be purchased ready-made or a base made of plastic or cardboard. And get creative. After all, it is the desire to join a narrow, "chosen" circle and be "not like everyone else" - the main feature of adolescence. This is what distinguishes all the subcultures that preceded quadrobics - emos, goths, tolkinists and others.

1. To skazat' (сказать) - To say. While "to say" exists in English, it doesn't carry the same nuance of a definitive statement or pronouncement. Russian often uses "to skazat'" to emphasize the act of stating something as a fact, with a sense of finality. 2. Pochemuchka (почемучка) - A curious person, especially a child who constantly asks "why?". English has "curious person" or "inquisitive," but "pochemuchka" is a more specific and affectionate term. 3. Toska (тоска) - A deep, often melancholic longing or yearning, a spiritual anguish without a specific cause. English words like "sadness," "melancholy," or "longing" don't fully capture the unique Russian feeling of "toska." 4. Avos' (авось) - A hope that things will turn out well by chance, without any effort or planning. It's a belief in luck or fate. English doesn't have a single word for this distinctly Russian concept. 5. Intelligentsia (интеллигенция) - A social class of intellectuals, artists, and educated people who consider themselves a distinct group with a responsibility to society. While English has "intellectuals" or "educated class," "intelligentsia" has a more specific historical and cultural connotation in Russian. 6. Dusha (душа) - Soul. While English has "soul," the Russian "dusha" often encompasses a broader range of meanings, including the inner self, one's character, and one's emotional core, with a deeper, more profound significance. 7. Blat (блат) - A system of informal connections and favors used to get things done, often circumventing official channels. It's a kind of informal networking or “knowing people.” English equivalents like "connections" or "networking" don't quite capture the often illicit or at least questionable nature of "blat." 8. Vyborgskaia storona (Выборгская сторона) - Literally "Vyborg side," but it's commonly used to refer to a more insular, provincial, or even slightly backward part of a city, in contrast to the more modern or central areas. It implies a certain character or social atmosphere. 9. Sverkhpotrebleniye (сверхпотребление) - Overconsumption. While English has "overconsumption" or "excessive consumption," "sverkhpotrebleniye" is a more concise and commonly used term in Russian to describe the phenomenon of consuming more than is necessary or sustainable. 10. Nedotopleniye (недотопление) - Insufficient heating. This is a very specific word for when a building or room is not heated enough, a common issue in colder climates where heating is a significant concern. English would require a phrase like "inadequate heating" or "not warm enough."
