Reading in Russian. Why is it hard for me to teach my child to read Russian?

Hi! Palme School's online Russian language school is here, and today we are going to talk about reading skills. Many parents try to teach their child to read, but not everyone succeeds. Let's find out what can be done about it.

The reading time is 3 minutes.

"The child has learned the letters, but he won't put them into syllables."

Yes, this is often the case. Especially when parents teach their child letters, pronouncing them as in the alphabet. This mainly concerns consonants: "bae", "em", "es", "ha" and so on.

And, when it comes to combining letters into syllables, the child can't understand why it's necessary to read "M-A" as "MA" and not "MAA".

Therefore, it is important to initially teach the child the sound designation of letters - "p", "s", "f", "t" and so on.

If a child is bilingual, his development is a little different. He has to be distracted by different language systems, and sometimes it takes some time for the bilingual's brain to "put the words on the shelves". We talked in detail about bilingualism in children in this article.

"My family has always read books, which means my child will love reading, too"

That's right. After all, children often copy their parents, and it is the family that introduces them to different types of leisure activities. If parents read to children from early childhood and show by example that free time can be spent with a book, children are more likely to get involved in reading. But this does not mean that no additional efforts should be made.

As with any activity, a child needs to develop an interest in reading. How to do this, we talked about in this article

In addition, it is important not just to learn how to read mechanically, but also how to comprehend what you read.

To do this, it is important to discuss books, ask questions and accept his or her any answers. Children often think outside the box and may reason in a different way than an adult expects.

"I don't have that much time to teach a child to read."

For this purpose, our school has developed separate lessons - "Reading School".

They aim to comprehensively teach children to read Russian texts from learning the alphabet to reading children's classics.

If your child is just learning Russian, we start with the basics - learning the alphabet. The cycle lasts for 10 lessons, during which the child will learn the alphabet, learn to form words and write in block letters.

Then begins a cycle devoted to teaching the skills and rules of reading in Russian. Children learn to read short stories by syllables. And already at this stage, together with the teacher, they comprehend texts and learn to discuss them.

In the third cycle, children who have learned to read fluently are introduced to age-appropriate fairy tales, poems and short stories. Together with the teacher, they expand their vocabulary and improve their communication skills.

So, classes meet in groups 1 or 2 times a week, depending on your subscription.

Each lesson is 40 minutes long.

Children are divided into groups according to age and level - bilinguals and children for whom Russian is a foreign language study in different groups. In order to make everyone feel comfortable.

Age categories:

Ages 4-6

Ages 7-9

10-14 years old

Lessons in the "Reading School" are primarily aimed at practicing reading skills. Therefore, children read during the lesson, and the teacher can correct mistakes, if any. After reading the text there is a block of discussion and practicing vocabulary.

Examples of texts for teenagers:

L.N.Tolstoy "The Man and the Horse", H.Christian Andersen "The Princess on the Pea", V. Dragunsky "What Bear Likes" and others.
