Imagine: for several years, you sit at a desk all day, trying not to fidget and listen to the teacher. And then, finally, it's recess. But instead of running outside, you stay in the building, staring at the screen. For millions of American kids, it's just a normal school day.
According to New York Post, In New York City, there is serious talk of making recess a law. In many American schools, recess has long been cut or replaced. Now kids sit in class and watch Disney while others take tests. There is no way to legislate minimum recess time in the state.
30 minutes a day is already a bill

State Assemblymembers Carrie Werner and Rachel May have introduced a bill that would require schools in grades 1 through 5 to give children at least 30 minutes of free playtime each day. No screens. No test prep. And no punishment like «no recess.».
Seems like a small thing. But research suggests otherwise Children who move are better able to concentrate, are calmer and perform better academically. Physical activity reduces anxiety According to one 2024 study, activity is as effective as therapy or medication.
It's no coincidence that just as change began to cut back, childhood anxiety and depression hit an all-time high. Today, one in five children in the United States faces mental health issues.
This is, of course, an American story. But the question is universal: how much time does a child spend in movement, in lively communication with peers - and how much time just sitting?
