Palme School

How and why implement discipline from childhood?

Hi! This is Palme School. Today we are talking about discipline from early childhood. We're going to look at two questions:

Why is it important to instill discipline from a young age?

How to implement discipline so as not to traumatize the child and save the parent's nervous system?

The reading time is 5 minutes.

Let's go!

Why is it important to instill discipline from childhood?

Any habit, both good and bad, is a conscious action and subconscious work. A mature adult has already formed a psyche, he is able to make efforts, to connect willpower, to form habits. And even adults have difficulties when it comes to following a strict regimen. And when it comes to children, you can face insurmountable difficulties.

Popular "Marshmallow." An experiment in which six hundred children were asked to take one treat now or wait 15 minutes and take two treats clearly demonstrates the nature of these difficulties. The vast majority of children chose one marshmallow at once. That's because children's psyches are incapable of accepting delayed pleasures, goodies, and the good life. After all, they want everything right now.

This is the main reason why it's hard to get kids to study, do routines, keep order, learn to read, etc.

So what do we do?

How to implement discipline so as not to traumatize the child and save the parent's nervous system?

Yes, kids have a hard time keeping routines and maintaining routine tasks, especially if they don't understand what those tasks are for.

But there are obligatory rituals:

  • Brush your teeth.
  • Do the cleaning in the room.
  • Prepare an assignment.
  • Observe safety rules.

What to do with them?

  1. So, it's important to explain and negotiate. Of course, it will not work the first time. Prepare for 6 conversations on one topic. Or even 26.
  2. In addition, you can add a timer with a cheerful song to your brushing routine. You can change the song every day if you like.
  3. In addition, some psychologists suggest the "Green, Yellow, Red" system. The essence is as follows: the green zone is what the child controls himself. For example, how to dress and what to eat for breakfast, with whom to be friends. Yellow zone - the child still controls actions, but coordinates them with an adult. For example, an extra hour of cartoons on special occasions, a candy bar and swimming in the lake under supervision. And there is a red zone - certain activities are forbidden. You can't play with electrical appliances, raise your hand to others or leave trash on the table. It's also important to talk about sanctions if a child violates the red zone. But they should not include physical punishment or other violence against the child.

There are still a number of habits that will help your child build a healthy mind and useful skills. We talked about them in this article.

Top 8 habits that will help your child's future. How to implement them.

Lessons at Palme School are also built on discipline:

  1. They are repeated several times a week at the same time.
  2. In doing so, we build important skills like memory, logic and reasoning, and we also prepare homework.
  3. We reinforce healthy habits through a system of praise. That's what we've been talking about here.
