Teaching Kids to Recognize Manipulation

Names and identifying details of every student here are changed, as they are everywhere on the blog.

Take a request your child might hear this week. Let me copy your homework. A child can refuse that one, and most of them will, because the cost of saying no is a mildly annoyed classmate and nothing else at all.

Every manipulation is two sentences glued together

Now glue something to it. Let me copy your homework, if you’re actually my friend. The ask hasn’t changed by a word, but the price of refusing has, because saying no to the homework is now saying no to the friendship, and a nine-year-old will hand over an awful lot of homework before they will do that. Nothing in the second half is a claim you can argue with, which is the point of putting it there.

Children can’t name the tactic, and they don’t need to

Adults teach the categories. Guilt, flattery, silent treatment, the threat dressed as a joke. Every nine-year-old forgets the list by Thursday, which is why the taxonomy never produces a child who spots it in real time. What they do notice is that something got attached.

A real request survives being answered. A glued one punishes you for answering.

The whole defense is pulling them apart out loud

I’ll say no to the homework. Are we still friends?

Answer the request. Refuse the second half. Out loud, in one breath.

That is the whole skill, and it takes eight words. It answers the request, declines the second half, and hands the awkwardness back to whoever put it there. Usually the seam comes apart, because it was never a condition in the first place, only a way of making the ask heavier, and the moment somebody says the two halves separately the second one has nowhere to hide. Occasionally it holds, and your child has learned something about that friendship for one worksheet.

I glued something on for years without noticing

Here is the sentence I used on teenagers, in a warm voice, for most of a decade: if you actually want to speak Russian, you’ll do the reading. Read it slowly. There is a request in there, do the reading, and a second half glued to it that says something about who you are if you don’t. I was not being manipulative in any sense I would have recognized then. I was being encouraging, and I had picked up the phrasing from teachers I admired, and it worked in the sense that the reading got done. What it also did was make the reading a test of sincerity rather than a piece of homework, so that a fourteen-year-old who was simply tired now had to choose between an evening off and a claim about her own commitment to a language she had not asked to learn.

The people who glue are almost never the people who planned to.

Adults do this too, and that is the harder conversation

After everything I’ve done for you. I’m not angry, just disappointed. These come from people who love your child, usually with no plan behind them, and often from people repeating a phrasing they were raised on without ever examining it. The rule holds. A child who sees the seam and says so is reading the sentence accurately, which is a different thing from being rude about it, though the two get confused constantly by adults who did not know the seam was visible. Our boundaries piece covers what comes next. At Palme School we teach online, in groups of up to eight, two forty-minute classes a week, and the first two lessons are free. You can book those here, and there are printable materials for parents in our resource library. H2: Frequently asked questions

01. How do I teach my child to recognize manipulation?

Skip the categories and teach the seam. The second half is what makes refusing expensive.

02. What if it comes from a family member?

The same rule applies. Say the two halves apart, and expect the second one to hold more often than it does with a classmate.
