Anton Pavlovich Chekhov - Russian Shakespeare

Interestingly, the writer himself sometimes signed his early works as Schiller Shakespeare Goethe. He is indeed called the Shakespeare of the 20th century. Just like the English classicist, Chekhov showed lively characters without subjecting them to judgment.

In addition, Chekhov's plays have gained worldwide fame and are staged at the best theatrical venues. In the repertoire of any theater, productions based on Chekhov's and Shakespeare's works are always side by side.

Finally, Shakespeare's plays laid the foundations of theater art in his time. While Chekhov's dramaturgy significantly influenced the development of theater art in the 20th century.

How does a writer have so many pseudonyms

There is no other writer in the world with as many pseudonyms as Chekhov. We have a list of more than 50 initials, which the author put under his works.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov began to seriously engage in creative work during his studies at the Taganrog gymnasium. The reason for this was the bankruptcy of his father, the sale of the estate in Taganrog and his move to his eldest sons. Therefore, Chekhov had to earn an early living, combining his studies with work as a tutor and part-time jobs in the newspaper. To be able to publish more often and receive more royalties, the writer invented different pseudonyms. Readers had no idea that the succinct, ironic notes in different newspapers came from the pen of one aspiring author.

Chekhov and dogs

"A good man can be ashamed even in front of a dog."

Anton Pavlovich loved dogs all his life and repeatedly made them heroes of his works. This is the mongrel Kashtanka in the story of the same name, and the white spitz in "Lady with a Dog, and the puppy that bit the master of goldsmithing Khryukin in the story "Chameleon" and others. Chekhov loved dogs for their intelligence and devotion, although he himself had a short period when the latter were part of his life.

Before leaving for treatment in Yalta, Chekhov had two dachshunds - Hina and Brom - living in the Melikhovo estate near Moscow. The writer's relatives recalled that Anton Pavlovich loved them very much, pampered them and often chatted with them. Unfortunately, this happy "dog" period lasted only 5 years. After which Chekhov had to part with his favorites.

But it was such a strong mutual affection that in the modern museum-estate Melikhovo there is a monument to the writer's favorite dachshunds.

In what toponyms the name of the writer is immortalized
