Russian Language Levels Explained. A1 to C2 for Russian Specifically

Names and identifying details of every student here are changed, as they are everywhere on the blog.

I once put a man in the wrong group on the strength of four minutes of reading, and it took three weeks to find out.

Nobody has one level, and the letter hides that

He read a page aloud, fluently, with good stress, and on that basis I placed him with the intermediate adults and then watched him say almost nothing for three weeks. I get about a third of what they say, he told me when I finally asked. I can read that page again if you want, he said, and it was not a joke.

His reading was solidly at one level. His listening was a step and a half below it, his speaking below that, and his writing hadn’t been tested by anybody, himself included. I had taken the highest of four numbers and written it down as his level. Names and identifying details of every student here are changed, as they are everywhere on the blog.

A single letter describes an average nobody actually experiences.

Where the four usually sit

Ask somebody who has been told they are at B1 to do four things, and you get four different answers.
SkillTypicallyWhy
ReadingHighest of the fourText waits for you and shows every ending
ListeningA step below readingSpeech does not wait, and endings blur
SpeakingBelow listeningYou must produce the form, not recognize it
WritingUntested for mostNobody writes Russian unless made to
That order holds. In sixteen years I’ve met maybe five adults whose speaking outran their reading, which is few enough that I remember all five. We only ever talked, nobody made me read anything, one of them said, and all five had learned at home rather than from a course.

The gap is not a flaw in you. It is what happens when three of the four skills are optional.

Why the spread is wider in Russian

The framework describes what a person can do, not what a given language makes them do to get there. What it never warns you is that the distance between recognizing a form and producing it varies enormously from one language to the next.

In the languages my own students usually arrive from, and that is a narrow sample, not a survey, recognizing and producing sit fairly close together. You hear a verb and you can more or less say it back. Russian puts a great deal of work between those two points. Six cases, running through nouns and adjectives and pronouns alike, verb pairs that force an aspect on you before you open your mouth, and stress that shifts between forms of one word without ever being written down.

None of that costs you anything while you read, because the page has settled all three before your eye arrives at the word. Speaking hands the same three decisions straight back to you, at conversational speed, in front of a person who is waiting for the end of your sentence.

In Russian, reading is a multiple-choice test and speaking is a blank page.

That is why a learner can spend two years arriving at a comfortable reading level and still stall on the fourth word of a sentence about their weekend. Our six-month roadmap is built around choosing which of these to develop deliberately, because they don’t come along together on their own.

What the letters mean in practice

Rather than repeat the standard descriptors, here is what each stage looks like in a lesson.

A1 and A2 move quickly, because short sentences and two tenses cover a great deal when everything is new. Then comes B1, where somebody can manage their own life in Russian and becomes painfully aware of everything they still cannot say. B2 opens up reading, makes professional work possible, and is usually where somebody discovers that listening has quietly become their weakest of the four. C1 and C2 belong to those who work in the language rather than with it.

Russia’s own state test maps onto these tiers directly, and if you need a certificate rather than a self-assessment, our guide to that exam covers what each level examines and how the five subtests work. So which one am I, people ask, and the honest answer is that they are four things at once, which sounds evasive until you sit the four tests.

How to find your actual four

Free level tests online will give you one number, usually a generous one, and almost always weighted toward reading and grammar because those are the parts a browser can mark without a human anywhere in the process.

Take fifteen minutes and do it properly instead, which means four separate small tests instead of one, run in the order that will annoy you least, and written down somewhere you will still have them in a month when you want to know whether anything moved. Read a page from a news site, counting what you missed, then listen to two minutes of anything unscripted without subtitles and count again. Record thirty seconds of yourself talking about your day, and compare the transcript against what you had meant to say. Finally write six sentences on the same subject and notice how long that takes you.

Listening was the humiliating one, a student wrote to me after doing this, which is the sentence almost everybody produces. It’s also the point: the number you find is the number a group placement should be based on, and it is rarely the one you would have guessed.

Not sure which of your four is the weakest

Two free lessons, and the first is mostly us finding out where you actually are across all four skills rather than one.

Frequently asked questions

What CEFR level is my Russian?

Four different ones, most likely. Reading is usually highest, listening a step below it, speaking below that, and writing untested. A single letter is an average of numbers that are rarely close together.

How long does it take to reach B1 in Russian?

Longer than the same letter takes in Spanish or French, and the hours involved are worth knowing before you plan around a date. What varies most is which skill you mean by B1.

Are free online Russian level tests accurate?

They are accurate about reading and grammar and quiet about everything else, which is why they tend to flatter. Any test a browser can mark automatically is testing recognition, not production.

Why can I read Russian but not speak it?

Because reading hands you every case ending, aspect choice, and stress placement already made, and speaking asks you to make all three yourself before the sentence starts.
