Months in Russian: table, pronunciation, and mnemonics for remembering

Months in Russian: table, pronunciation, and mnemonics for remembering

At kindergarten, they ask: «When is your birthday?» The child: «April.» In the evening, mom asks: «And in our language?» A pause.

Mom is upset. They did teach her. The flashcards were hanging on the fridge. But «aprel» isn't coming. «April» is coming: because the teacher asks it fifteen times a day and Mom asks it twice a week.

Based on the experience of Palme School, months: one of the first topics where this gap becomes noticeable. The child knows the word. But at the right moment, the English version comes.

Why do moms make the same mistake

They sit with the child. They name the months in order: January, February, March... The child repeats. Mom is pleased. A week later, «April» again.

List without a live situation It only works one way: I can hear and understand. Being able to speak it myself at the right moment is another skill.

The second mistake: correcting in front of others. A child says «April,» and the mother interrupts: «Say it in Russian.» The child gets embarrassed. The next time, they stay completely silent. Silence is worse than «April.».

How months are structured

The date on the block table is December 25th

The Russian months came from the same Latin as the English ones. Children feel this themselves: they almost always say, «This is practically like in English!». And it really works: recognition is faster than rote memorization. Yanvar and January. Mart and March. Dekabr and December.

The stress in most months falls on the last syllable: January, February, April, June, July, September, October, November, December. March and May have one syllable, so it's hard to get confused. The most common mistake is August. Children say «avGUST» by analogy with English. In Russian, it's «AVgust,» with the stress on the first syllable.

When the month is referred to on its own: «It's January,» «It's August soon.» When asking «which month»: all months take the ending -e: v yanvare, v fevrale, v marte. This is precisely where bilingual children stumble the most. They know the month itself. The form «v yanvare» (in January), no.

Month In Russian Pronunciation In English
1 January January January
2 February February February
3 March March March
4 April April April
5 May May May
6 June June June
7 July July July
8 August ⚠ August August
9 September September September
10 October October October
11 November November November
12 December December December

⚠ August - stress on the first syllable, not like in English

What helps: Masha's story

Masha, 8 years old, Houston. She confused the names of the months. Mom came up with a simple solution: each month had its own event. January: New Year. March: Mom's birthday and March 8th. April: Easter. November: Masha's birthday. December: Christmas. After a month, Masha knew all twelve. Not because she memorized a list. Because each month became something specific.

Winter ❄️ December, January, February January: New Year. December: Christmas and holidays in December, in January, in February
Spring March, April, May March: March 8th. April/May: Easter in March, in April, in May

Autumn September, October, November September: The start of school. A family member's birthday. in September, in October, in November

Family Birthdays They work better than any cards. «Grandma's birthday is in March.» «Dad's is in August.» These are real people, not abstractions. Children remember for a long time.

Holidays are connected to culture. For families in emigration, this is especially important: January: New Year, April or May: Easter, December: Christmas and the holidays.

in January. Another adds, «Grandma's coming in February already.» The third says, «We have Christmas in December, remember?» The child sees that months are living words. One source is not enough for this.

The child said «April»? Smile and add: «Yes, in April! And what holiday do we have in April?» Without correction. Without pause. The child hears the correct form in a live context.

At classes at Palme School Months are incorporated into the program and immediately practiced in dialogues: «When is your birthday?» «In November.» «And your mom's?» «In March.» The word is needed right away: that's exactly when it's remembered. The first two lessons are free.

01 Why does my child speak «April» at kindergarten but stay silent in Russian at home?

The teacher asks about the months fifteen times a day. Mom asks twice a week. The brain picks it up quickly. It's not a question of memory, it's a question of frequency.

02 Your child said «April» in front of everyone – how should you react?

Smile and add: «Yes, in April! And what holiday do we have in April?» Without correction. Without pause. The child hears the correct form and is not embarrassed.

03 «August» became «AuguST»—what to do now?

Just say more often yourself: «Dad's birthday is in August.» «It's hot in August, we're going to the sea.» In a month, the child will start saying it correctly themselves.

04 in January, in April

All months in this form take the ending -e: in January, in February, in March, in April, in May. Bilingual children often know the name itself but say «in January» instead of «в январе.» This is corrected through regular use in real-life situations.

05 How to quickly learn all 12 months?

Group by seasons: three winter, three spring, three summer, three autumn. And tie each to a family event: birthday, holiday, season. The list is hard to memorize. Live events are easy.
