How the American School Works, a Parent’s Glossary of Grades, GPA and Honors

Zhanna brought her daughter's first report card to a fill. Tenth grade, four letters, a number with two decimals, and a column she could not read at all. Her question was not about the grades. It was whether that number at the bottom decides the girl's future, because somebody at home told her it does.

Partly yes, and in a more specific way than the group chat thinks. So we went through the words one at a time, the way I wish somebody had done for me.

TermWhat it isWhat a parent should know
Letter gradeA, B, C, D or F for each courseThe percentage behind each letter is set by the district or school, not by the state
Progress reportAn interim update between report cardsA warning system, not a verdict, and the moment to act
TranscriptThe official record of courses and gradesThis is what colleges read, not the weekly portal
CreditWhat a course is worth toward graduationA failed course has to be repeated or recovered
GPA, unweightedThe average on a four-point scaleAn A is four points whether the class was easy or hard
GPA, weightedThe average with extra points for harder coursesAn A in an approved honors course can count as five
Honors, AP, IBAdvanced versions of regular coursesIn the University of California calculation all three earn the same extra point
A-GThe subject courses California requires for its public universitiesEach one has to be passed with a C or better

Two GPAs that are not the same number

Here is the part that confuses everybody, me included for years. The number printed on the report card is the school's own. A California public university calculates a different one, built from a narrower slice of the same record.

Universities here count only A-G courses, and only those taken from the summer after ninth grade through the summer after eleventh. Letters convert simply. Grade points run four for an A down to one for a D, with a B at three and a C at two. Plus and minus signs are ignored entirely. Pass and credit grades do not count either.

Then the honors bonus, one extra point for every semester of an approved honors-level course, and this is where the surprise lives. That bonus stops at eight points total between tenth and eleventh grade, and no more than four of them may come from tenth. Earn a D or an F in an honors course and the extra point disappears.

Loading up on 15 advanced courses does not raise that number. After eight semesters of honors, the extra points stop counting.

Terms that arrive later

Three more that show up by eleventh grade. Class rank, which not every school publishes and which means less than families expect. Honor roll, a school-level recognition with its own cutoff at each school. And dual enrollment, where a high school student takes an actual college course, which can count twice, once for high school credit and once at the college.

None of these replaces the transcript. They decorate it.

Why the D is the dangerous grade

It does pass the course, that D. The student moves on, the credit appears, the transcript shows a pass, and the family relaxes. Then it turns out that for the A-G list a D is not enough, because those courses need a C or better, so the course has to be taken again even though it was technically passed.

That is the most expensive misunderstanding in this whole subject, and it usually surfaces in eleventh grade, when there is the least room left to fix it.

Which year counts for what

Ninth grade grades stay out of the university's own calculation, which does not make them free, because they sit on the transcript and they decide which courses a student can take next. Tenth and eleventh are the two years that count directly. Twelfth matters for graduation, for the courses in progress, and for keeping an offer that has already arrived.

For a family that landed in the middle of high school, that is the practical map, and nobody at the school says it out loud in one piece.

Back home the numbers were different

In Argentina my school graded from 1 to 10, 6 was a pass, and a 6 meant the same thing in every school I knew. The first time I saw an American report card I understood the letters and none of the logic behind them.

What took me longest was learning that the percentage behind a B is not fixed nationally. Two schools, two scales, the same letter. My mother would have had opinions about that.

Notes she left with

She wrote down three things. Which of her daughter's courses are on the A-G list, which grades sit below a C, and how many honors semesters the girl has already used.

All three came back from the counselor in one email, four lines long, and Zhanna read it out loud to me at the next appointment, twice.

A transcript records the English and says nothing about the other language, the one that quietly thins out over the same four years. Palme School teaches children from four years old, online, in small groups, 40 minutes a lesson, and every family starts with two free sessions, a conversation with a methodologist and then a trial lesson in a group. A child who follows Russian and answers back in English belongs in Russian for bilingual children. When the speech is fine and the page is where everything stops, that is the reading school.

Frequently asked questions

01. What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA treats every A as four points regardless of course difficulty. A weighted GPA adds points for advanced courses, so an A in an approved honors course can count as five. Schools publish one or both, and a university may calculate its own.

02. How does the University of California calculate GPA?
Only A-G courses taken from the summer after ninth grade through the summer after eleventh grade are counted. Letter grades convert to points, A is 4, B is 3, C is 2 and D is 1, with pluses, minuses and pass or credit grades excluded. One extra point is added for each semester of a UC-approved honors-level course.

03. Is there a limit on honors points?
Yes. The honors bonus is capped at eight points between tenth and eleventh grade, with no more than four of them from tenth grade, and no bonus is given for a D or an F in an honors course.

04. Does a D count as passing?
A D earns credit toward graduation, but the A-G subject courses required by California's public universities must be passed with a grade of C or better, so a D there means the course has to be repeated.

05. Do ninth grade grades matter?
They are not included in the University of California GPA calculation, but they stay on the transcript and affect which courses a student can take in the following years.
