New English Words of 2025: How Language Keeps Evolving

Table of contents

Every language grows and changes every single day. New words appear thanks to world events, technology, politics, and of course — trends.

When major global or national events take place, most new words tend to reflect them. And when new subcultures emerge, fresh slang follows.

New English words of 2025

Recently, dictionaries have been updated with many political and tech-related terms, including:

  • AI-washing — the act of claiming a product uses artificial intelligence when it really doesn’t.
  • Greentrolling — shaming companies online for “fake” environmental practices.
  • Prompt injection — a type of cyberattack targeting AI systems.
  • Micro-nukes — slang for short but impactful political scandals.
  • Techno-nationalism — when countries use technology as a tool of influence and control.
  • Deepfake politics — the use of AI-generated videos to mislead or manipulate voters.
  • Climate doomism — the belief that climate change is already unstoppable.
  • Data colonialism — exploiting people’s personal data as a form of power.

Youth culture has also brought a wave of slang that quickly entered mainstream usage:

  • Goblin mode — living unapologetically messy and lazy.
  • Main character energy — acting as if your life is a movie and you’re the star.
  • BeReal-ing — posting authentic, unfiltered photos (from the BeReal app trend).
  • Rizz — short for charisma, describing someone’s charm or flirting skills.
  • Delulu — short for delusional, often used playfully about unrealistic crushes or expectations.
  • Shadowban — being secretly limited by a social media algorithm.
  • Canon event — a life experience seen as unavoidable and character-defining.
  • Corecore — an aesthetic mixing random clips to create emotional meaning.
  • Soft launch — subtly introducing a new relationship online without naming the person.
  • NPC — describing someone who seems to lack independent thought, like a video game character.
  • Situationship — a romantic or semi-romantic bond without clear definition.

Many of today’s most popular slang expressions in English also come from borrowing and remixing existing words. Social media especially fuels this process, turning niche internet jokes into global vocabulary.

  1. Guilt-tripping — a form of manipulation that makes someone feel guilty even when they’ve done nothing wrong.
  2. Ghosting — cutting off communication without warning or explanation.
  3. Gatsbying — posting content on social media with the secret goal of catching one person’s attention.
  4. Delusionship — a one-sided, imaginary relationship that exists only in someone’s head.
  5. OP (overpowered) / OP move — describing something unbeatable, extremely powerful, or impressive.
  6. Love-bombing — overwhelming someone with affection and attention to gain influence over them.
  7. Orbiting — staying on the edges of someone’s life, like watching their stories, without direct contact.
  8. Situationship — a relationship without a clear status or definition.
  9. Tilt — emotional frustration that throws someone off balance, common in gaming.
  10. To ult / dropping an ult — giving something your maximum effort, taken from video game terminology.

Of course, these are only a handful of the new words that entered mainstream use in 2025. According to dictionaries, more than 650 new terms were officially recorded this year alone.

But what happens to these neologisms?

In most cases, they fade away. Slang is tied to trends, and when the trend disappears, so do the words.

Still, once added to dictionaries, they remain as snapshots of cultural history. Each one marks a particular moment in society’s life.

Political terms often share the same fate. As events lose relevance, the language around them also vanishes from everyday use.

Technology-related words, however, tend to last much longer. A hundred years ago, “computer,” “microwave,” and “satellite” didn’t exist. Today, they’re so common that we barely notice them.

That’s why any new technological vocabulary is far more likely to stay with us for good.

According to Google’s trending searches, some of the most popular words of late 2024 and early 2025 include “vibe,” “delulu,” and “rizz.” Together, they reflect the cultural mood, internet humor, and global politics of our time.

Every day, language grows with new words shaped by technology, society, and global events.

By following these changes, we can better understand not only another culture’s present — but also our own.
