How does reading aloud develop children's speech?

Hi everyone, Palme School is here and today we are going to talk about an important skill that a child learns to read, reading aloud. How to read correctly in order to understand what is written? Why it is important to learn to read aloud and try to prolong this period, we will talk in today's article.

The reading time is 4 minutes.

Relationship to children's speech

"By reading authors who write well, one gets used to speaking well" (F. Voltaire).

When a child reads to himself, he runs his eyes over the text, catching the main meaning. When reading aloud, the child intonationally marks pauses and controls the rhythm of speech. Listening to himself, the child better learns how sentences are built - where they are divided into parts with the help of punctuation marks. In this way, the child understands the structure of a sentence and how the parts of speech are related to each other.

Also, when listening to himself while reading, the child hears his mistakes - in accents, in endings - and can correct himself. Or with the help of an adult, who will tell them how to read the word correctly. This is especially important when a child is learning a language as a foreigner and needs to memorize the pronunciation of words.

Reading aloud improves memory and vocabulary

Scientists at the University of Waterloo in Canada have been provenIt has been shown that reading aloud helps to memorize information better than reading to oneself or listening to it. The point is that when a child pronounces what is written, his brain perceives the speech as addressed to himself. Thus, it "writes" the information into long-term memory.

When reading aloud regularly, the child is exposed to repetitive words, and this helps to memorize them better. Both in writing and by ear.

Besides, this is how passive vocabulary turns into active vocabulary. After all, it is important not only to keep the word in your head, but also to be able to pronounce it. It is important to overcome the language barrier. We wrote a separate article about this article.

When reading, a child understands the variations in the use of words and phrases in the appropriate place. This is called context. For example, a child may know one meaning of the word "walk", which means to physically walk. But from the text, he may learn another meaning of this verb, when combined with the word "watch". In this way he will learn that the same word can have different meanings.

Reading develops emotional intelligence

We have already written in the article about the development of emotional intelligencethat reading contributes to a deeper understanding of oneself. After all, through empathy with characters, children develop empathy, and by associating themselves with characters in books, they can learn to evaluate their own and others' actions.

When a child reads a story, he sees how the characters face problems. But, as a rule, they find a way out of a difficult situation, and this teaches children not to give up and always bring things to an end.

Examples of books that will help a child develop emotionally

As soon as a child learns to read, he or she can be offered animal stories. Through the images of animals, children learn to recognize cunning and honesty, bravery and cowardice, laziness and diligence. They also realize that every living creature has its own needs and character.

Encourage your child to read aloud, motivated by the fact that you want to hear an interesting story. And then be sure to discuss what you heard together. This way the child will realize that the adult really cares about what he or she is doing.

Children of primary school age like to read about their peers. You can offer them to read short stories about children, for example, by N. Nosov, V. Dragunsky or M. Zoshchenko. So they learn about friendship and mutual support, learn to distinguish between good and bad deeds. And begin to analyze their actions.

Students 10 years old and older can also benefit from reading aloud, for the reasons listed above. And you can choose adventure stories. A list of popular books for teenagers can be read in this article:

Reading aloud is one of the stepping stones for an important step in a child's future life. After all, we all want to see our children emotionally mature and successful.
