The term «Academic Freedom» is being heard more and more often in the world. But what is it? And how does it affect our children?
What is Academic Freedom«
Academic freedom is instruction in which the teacher is free to explain the material as he or she sees fit.
This means that the educator can show different points of view on controversial issues and teach children to think for themselves.
This option teaches children to think rather than instilling certain beliefs. Neutral education does not deprive children of values. It teaches them to figure out complex issues for themselves, to weigh the facts, and to come to their own conclusions.
Why ideology in teaching is controversial

Ideology in school becomes a problem when children are imposed ready-made opinions instead of knowledge. This approach deprives children of the right to their own opinion.
The teacher here does not say «do as I do». He creates space for reflection and discussion. The child learns to listen to others, to respect their opinion, but at the same time not to be afraid to have his or her own point of view. In modern education, this is the most important skill.
What's important for parents to know
There is no such thing as a completely neutral school. Any education is based on some values: respect for people, honesty, and the pursuit of knowledge. It is important that these values do not turn into a rigid template that leaves no room for questions.
Critical thinking in children should be developed from a young age.
When choosing a school, pay attention:
- Are teachers prepared to explain how they approach complex topics
- Are there assignments in the program where children seek out information on their own and present different views
- Does the school respect the child's right to be different
The task of a school is not to raise a «right» person according to someone else's template, but to help a child learn to think for himself. The teacher's academic freedom is a guarantee of your child's right to have his or her own opinion.
