Many people around the world study foreign languages. But not everyone takes official exams to prove their knowledge.
In fact, almost every major language has its own exam. Today we’ll talk about TORFL — the Test of Russian as a Foreign Language.
This exam allows foreigners to apply to Russian universities, work as translators, and even conduct academic research in Russian.
What Is a TORFL Certificate?
TORFL stands for Test of Russian as a Foreign Language. It is required for obtaining residency, citizenship, or admission to universities in Russia.
It’s a universal assessment of language skills for many real-life situations. And in many of them, it’s simply necessary.
Alongside TORFL, there are also country-specific exams. For example, in the U.S. there are Avant STAMP and NEWL Russian exam. This is because specialists with Russian language skills are needed in many fields — and are in short supply.
TORFL has six levels, from basic knowledge to professional mastery:
- A1 — basic communication
- A2 — advanced communication for travel and daily life
- B1 — required for applying to Russian universities
- B2 — allows students to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Russia
- C1 — opens careers as translators, linguists, journalists, or researchers
- C2 — for academic teaching and scientific research
You can take the exam either in person or online. Anyone can apply. After passing a certain level, you receive an official TORFL certificate, which is recognized by employers and admissions offices.
