Phonetics and phonology of the modern Russian language

Phonetics and phonology of the modern Russian language

Phonetics of the Russian language studies how we pronounce sounds and how they sound.

She answers the questions:

  • Which sound is phonated and which sound is muffled
  • Where the accent is placed
  • How the sound of vowels changes without stress

Phonology of the Russian language looks at sounds not as physical phenomena. But as units of meaning. It finds out which sounds in the language are really important for distinguishing words. For example, the words «was» and «bil» differ by only one sound. That difference changes the meaning. Phonology is precisely the study of such units and rules that affect the meaning of words.

Peculiarities of the sounds of the Russian language

Modern Russian language has 6 vowel sounds and 36 consonant sounds. In total, there are 42 basic sounds. But in fact, in live speech we pronounce many more variants of these sounds.

It can often be confusing to use a movable accent. In Russian, it can fall on any syllable and change when the form of a word changes: «zemli» - «earth», «letter» - «pisem».

You can't just memorize words. You need to understand the logic of pronunciation. Otherwise, the speech will look unnatural and illiterate. This creates difficulties even for native speakers.

In addition, there is such a phenomenon as reduction - weakening of stressless vowels. In the word «milk», only the stressed [o] is clearly audible. And the other two sound like [a] or even a very short neutral sound. Without knowledge of this rule, foreigners often do not understand why native speakers «say not what they write».

Almost all foreigners are horrified by such nuances and peculiarities. After all, it is not enough just to learn words and rules. To be understood, you need to pronounce the sounds correctly. And the slightest mistakes in pronunciation can easily lead to terrible semantic errors.

Why it is important to understand the relationship between phonetics and phonology

Phonetics and phonology of the Russian language are closely related. Studying them together helps not just to speak correctly. But also to better understand the speech of others. And this is useful not only for foreigners learning the language. It is also useful for native speakers.

This knowledge is particularly useful in studying Russian. They help you avoid pronunciation errors, improve your listening comprehension and even write better. After all, many spelling rules, for example, «zhi-shee with the letter i», are based on the fact that the sound [s] after a hyphen is not marked with a separate letter - it is a phonological rule fixed in writing.

For those who is learning Russian online or with a tutor, understanding the sound system makes learning conscious. Instead of mechanical memorization, you begin to see the logic of the language.

How to study phonetics and phonology

Start over to understand the phonetics and phonology of the Russian language. For example, learn to distinguish between:

  • vowels and consonants
  • hard and soft
  • voices

It is very useful to learn transcription. It makes the invisible features of speech visible. Learn to write down and read the transcription.

You can listen to the speakers and repeat after them. It is important to pay attention not only to the words themselves. But also the pronunciation.

You can even record your pronunciation on a tape recorder and compare it with the original. Such an outsider's view helps you to see mistakes and progress.

Modern online courses allow you to organize Russian language study with an emphasis on pronunciation. With exercises, feedback and even AI analysis.

In order to learn a language it's not enough to just memorize the rules. After all, you need a language to speak it. And for native speakers to understand you.

The correct pronunciation of sounds depends on understanding why they are pronounced that way and not the other way around. It is important to convey the meaning of the pronunciation and avoid terrible and silly mistakes.
