How we engage students in the classroom through context

Hi, Palme School here with you, today we are going to share a useful technique we use to engage students in class.

Today we're talking about context. And our methodologists gave some comments.

What is context in language classes?

"Context is the creation of real-life situations in the classroom to immerse the student in everyday, cultural and social realities or to introduce history, literature and folklore."

How is context useful in Russian language lessons?

"Context helps to spark conversation outside of the learning environment. For example, we offer children virtual tours of museums or go shopping together. Younger children can introduce Masha and the bears to their family."

Why do we choose to educate children in this way?

As we know, the closer a topic is to a child's life and hobbies, the more exciting the learning process is. That's why our programs are based on adventure and travel. In addition, children get to know their favorite fairy tale characters and historical figures. They learn a new topic and then practice speech turns and discuss with Pushkin what they can do at the mall.

What do you base your hypotheses of effective teaching on?

"We study the most up-to-date and validated information from scholars both RCT (Russian as a foreign language) researchers, educators, psychologists and neuroscientists."

For example, psychologists from West Lafayette, U.S.A. in 2011 studied the "testing effect." This is a phenomenon in which students learned more effectively if they retrieved material from long-term memory instead of memorizing it.

The point is that each new block of information has to be retrieved from memory, figured out how and where else the information applies, shared and discussed with your teacher or fellow students. And for more on how we implement research, read here.
