Tips from speech therapists, specialists and writers: how to still teach your child to read

Tips from speech therapists, specialists and writers: how to still teach your child to read

How to get your child interested in reading? Reading develops the imagination and broadens the mind. It helps you learn about the world and history. It is also good for brain development and vocabulary.

A great deal of reading develops resourcefulness and ingenuity. It is an experience that a person can gain without personal mistakes.

But most children really don't like to read. And it is almost impossible to make them pick up a book. And even more so to motivate a child to read and instill a love of books.

Many parents wish that instead of gadgets, children would read more. But how to get a child interested in books? There are some tips that are suitable for children of any age.

Why children don't like to read

In today's world, books are taking a back seat. After all, children are much more interested in watching bright pictures and videos or playing games on gadgets.

They find the book boring and gray. What could be interesting in a book? Just letters and few or no pictures. Reading requires you to strain yourself, to deal with incomprehensible words. But in the video, everything is simple and clear.

Children do not realize that there is a huge world on the pages of books. It is only necessary to open them and start reading. If movies give their own, ready-made reality for our perception, books allow us to create our own world based on what is written. This is the main advantage of books. This is what we need to convey to the child.

How to get a child interested in books

You should start teaching your child to read gradually. But it should be done from childhood.

The first and most important thing is personal example. You will never get your child interested in reading if you don't read yourself.

Your child should see that you regularly read, discuss books at home. You admire new publications. It is desirable to have at least a small library at home. So that the child has a choice.

Little children love to leaf through books. And your task is to catch their interest and not let it fade away.

Kids won't escape the influence of gadgets. But you can show them that there is another world besides smartphones and tablets.

Reading together will also spur the child's interest. Children really love and appreciate time spent with their parents. At any age.

If you read together regularly, your child will develop a strong bond. Reading = comfort and calm. And he will start reading himself in the future to achieve these feelings.

Reading can be a way for a child to relax and de-stress. And in the future, he or she will be able to use this relaxation option during difficult moments in life.

It is important to choose books for your child according to his or her age and interests. Otherwise, the interest in reading will not be achieved.

At 2-5 years old, fairy tales and short children's works are suitable for children. At 6-10 years old, you can try reading children's adventure stories. Detectives or young adult romance books may be suitable for teenagers.

Gradually you can introduce the classics. The main thing is not to overdo it, so as not to discourage the child from reading classic literature for life. Start with the easy ones. For example, with comedies by Nikolai Gogol. When choosing works of literature, always start from the child's interests.

The benefits of reading to a child

Apart from developing imagination and other important benefits for the child, reading helps a lot in speech development. Reading with mom from birth helps to memorize by ear pronunciation. Children who read begin to speak correctly more quickly and expand their vocabulary.

Speech therapists recommend read regularly with children, because it helps prevent speech defects or correct problems that already exist.

Gadgets and games do not allow a child to develop. Reading, on the contrary, makes a child work hard, learn and develop his brain. And only hThrough work comes development. That's why it's so important to introduce regular reading into a child's life.
