Yuri Nikulin was more than just an actor — he was a symbol of joy. His name alone brings warm nostalgia for millions who grew up in the Soviet Union.
A kind-hearted clown and a beloved film star, he dedicated his life to making others smile. But what was his own story?
A Brief Biography
Yuri Vladimirovich Nikulin was born on December 18, 1921, in Smolensk Province. Soon after, his family moved to Moscow.
Right after finishing school, he was drafted into the army. He fought in the Soviet-Finnish War, and later in World War II, serving near Leningrad. He was only demobilized in 1946 — after seven long years of war.
At the age of six, little Yuri visited the circus with his father. That day, he fell in love with the magic of the arena. After the war, he decided to pursue a career on stage.
He first tried applying to VGIK (the film institute), but was told he had no acting talent. Instead, he enrolled at the Circus School at the Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard. That very circus later became his true home — and today proudly bears his name.
Even though cinema brought him immense popularity, the circus always remained his greatest love. He performed in the ring until age 60, after which he became chief director of the same circus.

Roles in Film
Nikulin’s film career began in 1958 with a small role in A Girl with a Guitar.
Audiences mostly remember him for his brilliant comedic performances, but his dramatic roles were no less powerful. His performance in White Bim Black Ear moved even the toughest viewers to tears. He also appeared in Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece Andrei Rublev.
Nikulin sang most of his songs in films himself.
