Who among us doesn't like to have fun? Lots of friends, noisy, bright!
In Russian there is even a special word for such an event - «kutit».
Any Russian-speaking person will immediately understand what we are talking about. It is synonymous with festivities and merry noisy gatherings.
But where did the word come from? What are its origins? Let's find out.

The meaning of the word «revel»
In the explanatory dictionary of the Russian language by V. I. Dal there are definition:
«Kutite", kuchivat', kutnan', about wind, weather: whirl, twist, whirl. The wind is smoking; the yard is smoking.
About a person: to hoe, to get drunk, to spin; to live headlong, to be desperately procrastinating, to drink, to rage. Our kutyutyat in the cellar. And we, in the hussars. Kutnem together, let's go! Kutny on everything! To smoke and make trouble. Kutnim, and make people muddle. To kutn up all over Ivanovo.»
That is, the word has a certain negative connotation. It is not just a noisy party, but rampant fun, which does not always end well. And most often it is associated with hot drinks.
The same is said of a person who is used to living a life of freedom, fun, without obligations or rules.
This word came into our speech from the Russian North. In the Arkhangelsk region, «kutit» was a synonym for the verb «to get drunk»; it was also used to refer to stormy weather with wind, snow and rain. In the Chukhlomsky colloquialism of the Kostroma region, «nakutit» meant «to bring a lot of snow».
From this we can conclude that the word «coot» practically means «chaos» and tumultuous movement without control. Both in human life and in the weather.

«Kutit» in the modern Russian language
Now the word remains one of of a few old Russian words, that we still use in speech.
In the old days, anyone who lived life instead of working was a social outcast and an object of ridicule. But as time went on, rowdy fun became the norm for almost all people.
Already in the 18th and 19th centuries, in the great works of Pushkin, Dostoevsky and other famous writers, this word is used in the sense of fun and debauchery. But such a life was available only to rich people. The poor simply did not have the money for it.
There are also characters in literature who, for example, «squandered their inheritance». Or «spent every night at balls».
In the modern world, the negative connotation of the word «party» has changed to a positive one. There is nothing wrong with spending an evening in a noisy group of friends.
The old Russian word «kutit» has been replaced by its analogs: «party» and «lighter».
But to this day, the word can still be heard frequently in movies, songs, and even memes.
This word has been tightly integrated into our lives for many centuries. After all, most of us also like to have a good time once in a while.
