Sometimes a child’s Russian skills seem advanced — they speak fluently, understand everything they hear, and easily chat with peers. Yet when it comes to reading, they suddenly struggle.
As a result, students who can communicate at a high conversational level often have to start in beginner groups. That’s because standard classes develop all skills at once: speaking, listening, and reading. To solve this problem, the Palme School of Russian Language has created a special course — The Reading School.
Beyond the Classroom: Learning to Read in Russian
Reading in Russian is an essential part of language learning. Without strong reading skills, full language fluency is impossible. That’s why it’s important to focus on this area if it’s underdeveloped.
The Reading School is different from regular lessons. Instead of covering every skill at once, these classes focus exclusively on reading and writing. To make the learning process age-appropriate, we offer three specialized groups:
1. Preschoolers (ages 4–6)
Foundational reading instruction designed for early learners. Children learn to hear and distinguish sounds, understand how letters represent those sounds, and take their first steps toward reading simple words.
2. Early School Age (ages 7–9)
Students learn to recognize and write letters, combine them into syllables, and begin to read simple texts. As they progress, they start to understand storylines and practice meaningful reading — not just decoding.
3. Middle School Students (ages 10–14)
Here, children work on comprehension and vocabulary development through short, thematic texts. Reading becomes a tool for learning, not just a skill in itself.
Being able to speak Russian allows children to communicate — but true cultural understanding goes deeper.
Reading Russian authors in the original language lets students feel the spirit, rhythm, and nuance of Russian culture. That’s why it’s so important not only to speak and listen — but also to read and write fluently in Russian.
