They say behind every great man stands a great woman. And when it comes to the legendary artist Salvador Dalí, that’s absolutely true.
But not many people know the woman who made him world-famous — and helped preserve his legacy for generations. That woman was a Russian immigrant named Elena Dyakonova.

The Life of Dalí’s Muse
Elena was born in 1894 in Kazan, Russia, and later moved to Moscow. At the age of 18, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis and sent to Switzerland for treatment.
There, she met the French poet Paul Éluard, who gave her the nickname "Gala" (with the stress on the second syllable).
“Gala” in French means “celebration,” which perfectly suited her vibrant personality. Gala and Paul eventually got married and stayed together for 12 years.
But everything changed in 1929, when she met a young, unknown artist named Salvador Dalí.
Their first meeting was life-changing — even though Gala didn’t like Dalí at first.
Soon after, they got married. And from that moment on, Dalí said their life was one long honeymoon.
They were completely devoted to one another — both in love and in work.

Dalí’s Rise to Fame
Gala Dalí played a key role in her husband’s worldwide success. With a background in the arts and promotion, she quickly turned Dalí into an international sensation.
She wasn’t just his manager — she was also his muse. In fact, she was the only woman besides Dalí’s sister who posed for his paintings. Their passion lasted well into old age. One of Dalí’s grandest gifts to Gala was a real castle in Catalonia.
But Gala agreed to accept the castle under one strict condition: Dalí could not visit unless she sent him a written invitation.
After she moved into the castle, the couple slowly began to drift apart.
Gala passed away in 1982. Dalí didn’t attend the public funeral but quietly visited her grave hours later.
Gala Dalí was not just the wife of a great artist. She shaped him — and brought his genius to the world.
One of millions of immigrants, Gala left her mark on history as the woman who inspired Salvador Dalí for a lifetime.
