In the United States and many other countries, Dinosaur Day is celebrated on the third Tuesday of May. In addition, June 1 is recognized as National Dinosaur Day at the San Antonio Zoo in Texas.
But why do we dedicate an entire day to these ancient creatures?
The History of Dinosaur Day
People first discovered evidence of dinosaurs back in 1677 — though at the time, a single fossilized bone was mistakenly believed to be from a giant human.
In the early 19th century, scientists began finding more bones and teeth. These discoveries led to the idea that prehistoric animals once roamed the Earth — long before humans.
Some of the dinosaur names we know today were invented during that time. For example, Iguanodon got its name because of its similarities to an iguana.
It’s not entirely clear when Dinosaur Day first began in the U.S. or worldwide. But today, it’s a fun and educational holiday — especially for families with curious kids who love to explore the natural world.

How to Celebrate Dinosaur Day
The best way to celebrate? Dive into the world of dinosaurs! Below a few fun ideas for your family.
Watch dinosaur-themed movies together, such as:
- Jurassic Park
- The Lost World
- Night at the Museum
Play dinosaur board games or card games — they’re not only fun but educational too!
Host a family quiz to find out who knows the most about dinosaurs.
Draw your own dinosaurs! Use your imagination to come up with what they might have looked like.
Visit a natural history museum where you can see dinosaur skeletons and other fossils in real life.
However you choose to spend the day, make sure you have fun and learn something new!

Why Celebrate Dinosaur Day?
Dinosaur Day is a unique opportunity for both kids and adults to explore the history of life on Earth.
Studying dinosaurs isn’t just about fossils — it’s also a great introduction to geology, geography, and climate science. You’ll learn about how Earth has changed over millions of years, how continents moved, and how the environment evolved.
Most kids are fascinated by dinosaurs — and they’ll happily spend hours learning about them. That’s why this holiday is both fun and meaningful.
At Palme School, we believe that topics children love — like dinosaurs — are powerful tools for learning. We build lessons around these interests to spark curiosity and make learning joyful.
If you want your child to explore science and language in a creative, engaging way, we invite you to get to know our school.
