Why you should teach math even if your child isn't Perelman

Sometimes it seems that a child is a pure humanitarian, and physics and math are as far from him as the sun is from the earth. But math is useful for every child, even if he is not going to become the second Grigory Perelman or Sophia Kovalevskaya. And here's what it's for.

Develops thinking. Let us clarify: different types of thinking - critical, abstract, logical, visual and figurative, analytical. If a schoolchild solves mathematics problems, he learns to highlight the important things, analyze, put them on the shelves, notice regularities and interrelationships, think abstractly and logically. Regular math practice develops the intellect.

Helps you learn other subjects better. The child will be able to transfer the knowledge of math, for example, to drawing, where it is necessary to correctly convey proportions, or music, where it is necessary to understand the tempo of the melody.

Develops accuracy, consistency, neatness and self-control. Once faced with solving a complex example, the child will realize how important it is to follow the rules, take his time and double-check himself. And these skills will be useful not only in other subjects or exams, but also in ordinary life.

Helps you choose the best course of action. There are several ways to solve an example and each way can be correct, but one option will be faster and the other will not. The ability to identify all paths and choose the most appropriate one will be useful for everyone and always.

Teaches you to look at things skeptically. Sometimes it seems like an easy and simple task, but then it turns out we rushed into it. And so it is in life. It seems that allocating a budget for the month is a simple matter, but when faced with it, we have to go through different options.

Gives you confidence. If you have a complex mathematical expression in front of you, divide it into parts and simplify it. Then it will work out. This skill comes in handy everywhere. For example, if you need to sort out a mess in the house or prepare for moving, you can break the whole into several parts-tasks and find the best way to solve each task.

It is possible to talk about why children need math for a long time. The famous quote by Mikhail Lomonosov comes to mind: "It is necessary to study mathematics because it puts the mind in order".
