What does your child want to be?

Bill Gates used to say, "Enjoy what you do and you won't have to work a day in your life." But how can you help your child find something to do? Here's what you can do:

- Observe what the children are interested in. Some of them can't let go of their cars from childhood, while others freeze when they hear a violin. Others can spend hours drawing and coloring. Not necessarily abilities and interests will grow into a profession, but they can help you choose at least a direction.
Talk to your children about the subject of interest - music, drawing. Ask questions, tell interesting facts, buy books on the subject, watch videos. If children know Russian quite well, you can watch the cartoon "Navigatum". There in each series tell about different professions.

- Give children maximum opportunity to prove himself. Ingvar Kamprad traded various items from an early age and eventually founded IKEA. His parents gave him the opportunity to do what he thought was right and he eventually became successful. It is good when parents support their child's endeavors: they buy paints if he likes to draw, bring old computers if he likes to dig into hardware.

- Talk about a variety of occupations. More often parents tell their children about popular professions, such as police officers, nurses, and teachers. But there are also business management consultants, recruiters, aerospace engineers, information systems analysts. Explaining what they do is sometimes difficult, but you can give a general direction. Talk about your work more often, and if possible, sometimes take your children with you.

- Suggest that children be tested for career guidance. In Canada, there are centers at universities where graduates can apply.

You can also take ordinary tests on the Internet. For example, for career guidance according to Klimov's methodology. It will help the child to listen to himself and, perhaps, to understand what he is interested in, and what is definitely not for him.
