Feminitives in modern Russian: how right and how wrong they are

Feminitives in modern Russian: how right and how wrong they are

Feminitives are taking over the world.

Tolerance for all people is becoming a trend. Everyone is demanding special rights for themselves. And even the creation of new words.

Feminist activists around the world have demanded the creation of new words to indicate female gender identity.

First of all, it affected the names of professions. This is how words like «author» and «blogger» appeared.

Of course, it is illiterate to speak like that. And these feminitives have not entered the official Russian language. However, there are literate feminitives that should be added to your speech in the modern world.

The Russian language, like any other language, is constantly changing. The language changes are influenced by time, technology, political situation and many other factors.

New words appear in any language all the time. But the fashionable movement of feminitives deserves special attention.

These words did not come into existence under the influence of progress. We can say that they were created thanks to fashion.

Feminists found it offensive that the names of many professions are only in the masculine gender, even though they are also practiced by women.

So they began to assert their right to name professions in the feminine gender.

Of course, this does not mean that feminitives did not exist before. There have always been many of them in the Russian language.

For example:

  • Gymnast is a word quite familiar to our ears.
  • A soccer player - long ago entered our speech and sounds familiar
  • Soloist - no questions asked
  • Stewardess is the opposite of the word that sounds much more familiar than the male version

Even the word «feminist» reflects an affiliation with the female gender.

What to say about the words «principal», «teacher», «administrator». We have long since gotten used to them and do not perceive them as something strange.

Such words are formed from the names of professions in the masculine gender with the suffixes «k», «s», «ts» or «sh».

On the same principle, activists started to create feminitives from all other words. Thanks to this fashion, new words unofficially appeared:

  • Driver
  • Editorial (although «editor» would be more literate)
  • Operator
  • Ingenieur

You have to admit, those words are a bit of a mouthful. But for now.

Many words were unfamiliar and even unpleasant at first. But over time we got used to them and now we cannot imagine our speech without them. The same will inevitably happen with the new feminitives.

When using feminitives, one should not be guided only by personal feelings. Sometimes a literate word may not seem very euphonious.

Feminatives are not formed from nouns ending in -graph, -phil, -ved. So it would be illiterate to use the word «photographer» or «art historian».

Feminitives are not formed from words ending in -er/er (sprinter, combine harvester, chauffeur, etc.) and -or (lecturer, author, editor, editor, orator, rector, etc.).

The literate formation of feminitives is done with the help of suffixes:

  • -sh- («announcer» → «announcer»)
  • -k- («student» → «student»)
  • -shchitz- («bath attendant» → «bath attendant»)
  • -nitz- («writer» → «writer»)

Any language lives and changes under the influence of time. This is inevitable. In the case of feminitives, there are many controversial points that cause discussions.

Some think it is a completely unnecessary corruption of the language. Some believe it is a logical evolution.

But one thing is certain - the world is changing and we are changing with it. And there is no way to stop these changes. The only thing left to do is to adapt and learn the new rules.

Literacy is the beauty of a person that is not conspicuous but is always perceived by others.
