Many parents want to help their children develop faster and more effectively. Good news — there’s a simple tool backed by science that helps train focus, memory, and even reading skills.
It’s called the Schulte Table, and it’s used by teachers, psychologists, and reading specialists around the world.
How Does It Help?
A Schulte Table is a grid filled with randomly placed numbers.
The task is to find all the numbers in order (from 1 to the highest number) as quickly as possible.
The faster a person can find the numbers, the better their visual attention, processing speed, and mental flexibility.
Originally created by German psychiatrist Walter Schulte to assess attention disorders, these tables are still used today — even in the diagnosis of ADHD in children.
But they’re also great for training attention and reading speed, especially in kids learning a second language.

How to Use a Schulte Table
There are different ways to train, depending on your goal:
✅ Want to improve reading speed?
✅ Want to boost visual memory?
✅ Tips for success:
This is exactly how fluent reading works — the brain begins to “see” whole words and phrases instantly, without sounding them out.

Types of Schulte Tables
There are Schulte Tables for all ages. Children’s tables start with fewer numbers (e.g. 1–25), while adult tables are larger and more complex.
Here’s a sample Schulte Table — how fast can you find all the numbers in order?

Couldn’t do it without moving your eyes? That’s a sign you — or your child — could benefit from Schulte Table training too!
If you haven't been able to do that, it's time for you to start practicing your reading speed too.
But even if these tables did not cause you any difficulties it is worth regularly practicing to develop your attention and thinking.
Even adults benefit from regular training — just 5 minutes a day can help keep the brain sharp and prevent age-related decline.
At Palme School, we use Schulte Tables as part of our Russian reading program.
They help our students — even complete beginners — start reading fluently much faster.
