A child's personal boundaries. How adults violate them

It is important that every child understands where his or her "personal space" is and can always, if necessary, say "no" or refuse something that is unpleasant for him or her. This skill will help in the future in various life situations. For example, with friends, classmates, when he or she is offered to do something unsafe for health or personally unpleasant actions: climbing on the roof of the house, laughing at someone, skipping lessons, deceiving someone.

It is often the case that a child does not want to do something like this, realizing that it is all wrong, but does not know how to refuse. It is very easy to manipulate indecisive children who do not understand their own boundaries and in dangerous situations will not be able to fight back.

Mom and Dad can explain to a child what "personal boundaries" are and when they are violated. But sometimes adults themselves allow themselves to do too much. Examples of when they violate a child's boundaries:

- Force-feeding. Of course, parents always "see" whether a child wants to eat or not. The same applies to taking medication, medical procedures and dressing and undressing the child
- Slapping, punching, slapping hands, lips. and spankings can seem like harmless parenting moments to some parents.
- The habit of entering without knocking in the room of a child over 6 years of age. It is important to knock on the child's door and teach this behavior to him
- Ignoring any complaints from the child. He may say that he is uncomfortable in new shoes or clothes. Sometimes parents respond rudely, saying that it's all made up and that they know best whether he is cold or hot, comfortable or uncomfortable
- Forcing him to kiss or hug when he doesn't want to do it
- Shame a child for something in front of other people. If you really have something to say to your son, daughter, have a one-on-one conversation.

To make sure that your child grows up confident, and in any unpleasant situation can decisively refuse, try to make time for socializing now.
