Sometimes kids in a frenzy tell their parents something like "But Johnny Depp didn't do well in school either!". Nice try, kids. But there are studies that prove that school grades affect our lives.
What kind of research
In 2019, the Center for Institutional Analysis of Science and Education at the European University in St. Petersburg conducted a survey. One of the questions was: "What (approximately) was the average grade in your school certificate?". This is the difference between excellent and underachieving students.
What results
For example, those who said their high school diploma had mostly A's differed from those who said there were mostly C's in the following ways:
- Former honors students are more active in all forms of cultural life. For example, 59% honors students and 29% third graders have been to the theater in the last 12 months. And a total of 15% honors students and 50% third graders do not read fiction.
- Excellent students go to the dentist regularly, even for prophylaxis. But 35% of excellent students and 71% of failing students don't go to the dentist until nothing hurts.
- Excellent students have a higher level of financial literacy. Only 10% of excellent students and 29% of three-year students do not know what a cacheback is.
- Excellent students prefer olive oil to mayonnaise. That's 48% honors students and 10% threes.
- Excellent students are more likely to eat at home with a knife and fork. For example, 48% of excellent students and 33% of three-year students eat this way at a typical dinner at home.
- Excellent students are less likely to smoke. There are 16% excellent smokers vs. 38% three-year students who smoke daily.
- Excellent students do not like Daria Dontsova and Russian chanson, but, according to them, "very much like" jazz, blues and classical music and recognize Malevich's "Black Square" as art, even if they do not like it.
It turns out that most honors students:
- Taking care of their health
- Actively participate in cultural life
- Interested in art
- Financially literate
- Choosing a healthy diet
- Form healthy habits
- Appreciate good literature
This research is a great reason to think about whether we as parents need to encourage our child to learn better. If you decide that you do - welcome to Palme School, we are happy to hear from you!
